During Indus valley civilization the trade was carried on not by metal money but on exchange of things, it was in form of barter system.

trade practices of the Harappa were usually dealt with the stones, metals, shells etc. there was not monetary transactions during that time.

Any material thing could be used for exchange of material, goods and needs.

They also had trade relations with other civilizations as well like the western developments.
